Ingredients

Scale

Cauliflower and Batter

  • 1 medium head of cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Oil for frying

Sauce

  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup honey or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)

Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • Chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cauliflower: Cut the cauliflower into bite-sized florets and set aside, ensuring they are clean and dry before coating.
  2. Make the Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, water, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Coat the Cauliflower: Dip each cauliflower floret into the batter, making sure it is fully coated to achieve a crispy texture when fried.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, pour enough oil to cover the bottom (about ½ inch deep) and heat it over medium heat until hot enough for frying, approximately 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the Cauliflower: Carefully add the battered florets to the hot oil in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each side for about 4-5 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Prepare the Sauce: In a separate saucepan, combine the soy sauce, honey or maple syrup, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and the cornstarch-water mixture. Cook over medium heat while stirring constantly until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  7. Combine: Add the fried cauliflower pieces into the thickened sauce and gently toss until the cauliflower is evenly coated with the sticky sesame sauce.
  8. Garnish: Sprinkle the coated cauliflower with sesame seeds and chopped green onions to add a crunchy texture and fresh flavor.
  9. Serve: Transfer the sticky sesame cauliflower to a serving platter and serve immediately for the best crispiness and flavor.

Notes

  • You can substitute maple syrup for honey to make this recipe vegan.
  • To reduce oil absorption, make sure the oil is hot enough before frying the cauliflower.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and gluten-free soy sauce tamari.
  • Serve with steamed rice or as an appetizer with dipping sauce for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in an oven or air fryer to regain crispiness.
