Ingredients
- 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (jamaica)
- 8 cups water
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- Boil the Hibiscus Flowers: In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the dried hibiscus flowers and reduce to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the water turns a deep red color and the flavors infuse well.
- Strain the Infusion: Remove the pot from heat and strain the hibiscus liquid through a fine sieve into a pitcher or bowl to separate the petals from the infused water.
- Sweeten the Drink: While the liquid is still warm, stir in the granulated sugar until fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to taste by adding more or less sugar.
- Chill Before Serving: Allow the agua de Jamaica to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice for a refreshing beverage.
Notes
- Adjust sugar according to your desired sweetness; you can substitute with honey or agave nectar for a natural sweetener.
- For extra flavor, add a cinnamon stick to the boiling water or a squeeze of fresh lime juice when serving.
- Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Hibiscus has natural antioxidant properties and is rich in vitamin C.
