Sushi Roll Ingredients
- 2 cups sushi rice (cooked and seasoned)
- 4 sheets nori (seaweed)
- 6 oz imitation crab meat or real crab, shredded
- 1/2 cucumber, julienned
- 1 ripe avocado, thinly sliced
- Prepare the Sushi Rice: Cook the sushi rice according to package instructions, then season it with sushi vinegar. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
- Prepare the Fillings: Julienne the cucumber and shred the crab meat. Thinly slice the avocado and set aside carefully to avoid browning.
- Assemble the Roll: Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and cover it with plastic wrap. Lay one sheet of nori shiny side down on the mat. Spread an even layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top edge.
- Add Fillings: Flip the nori and rice so the nori side is facing up. Arrange crab and cucumber in a line across the bottom third of the nori sheet.
- Roll the Sushi: Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the sushi away from you, pressing firmly but gently to form a tight roll.
- Top with Avocado: Place avocado slices over the sushi roll, covering it completely to create the look of dragon scales. Use the bamboo mat to gently press the avocado onto the roll.
- Slice the Roll: Using a sharp knife dipped in water, slice the roll into 6-8 even pieces. Clean the knife between cuts to maintain clean slices.
- Serve: Arrange the slices on a plate and serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi if desired.
Notes
- Use a sharp knife dipped in water for cleaner cuts.
- Sushi vinegar is a mix of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt—adjust to taste when seasoning rice.
- Optional toppings include eel sauce or spicy mayo for added flavor.
- Ensure the avocado is ripe but firm to prevent mushy texture.
- Keep a bowl of water nearby to moisten your hands when handling sushi rice.
