Ingredients

Scale

Yeast Mixture

  • 2 tsp Active Dry Yeast
  • 1/4 cup Warm Water

Dough

  • 1 cup Milk (room temperature)
  • 6 Tbsp Butter (melted and divided)
  • 1/3 cup Sugar
  • 1 Large Egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 1/24 cups Flour

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a stand mixer bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit undisturbed for 10-15 minutes until the yeast has dissolved and become foamy.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: Add milk, 4 tablespoons of melted butter, sugar, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Using the dough hook attachment on low speed, mix gently for about 1 minute until combined.
  3. Add Flour and Form Dough: Gradually add flour one cup at a time while mixing after each addition. Continue until a soft dough forms that pulls away cleanly from the sides of the bowl. Depending on humidity and flour type, you may use between 3 1/2 to 4 cups of flour.
  4. First Rise: Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape Dough: Lightly punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Cut Dough: Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into 20-24 equal square pieces.
  7. Second Rise: Place the dough squares spaced at least 1 inch apart on two baking sheets sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Cover and allow them to rise for 30 minutes, until doubled in size.
  8. Preheat Oven: While the rolls are rising, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake Rolls: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are light golden brown on top.
  10. Butter and Cool: Remove the rolls from the oven and brush them immediately with the remaining melted butter. Allow them to cool slightly before serving to enjoy their soft, buttery texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm but not hot to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Milk should be at room temperature to help yeast activation and dough consistency.
  • Allow the dough to rise in a warm draft-free area for best results.
  • Using a stand mixer with a dough hook significantly eases the kneading process.
  • Brush the rolls with butter right after baking to maximize flavor and softness.
  • The number of rolls depends on how large or small you cut the dough squares.
