Ingredients

Scale

Mozzarella and Breading

  • 8 slices fresh mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs

Sauce and Cooking

  • 1/2 cup olive oil (for frying)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the breading stations: Mix together the flour and garlic powder in one dish. In a separate dish, whisk the egg and milk together until well combined. In a third dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  2. Bread the mozzarella: Dip each slice of fresh mozzarella first into the flour mixture, ensuring it is evenly coated. Next, dip the floured mozzarella into the egg wash, then press it firmly into the panko breadcrumbs to cover completely. Set aside on a plate.
  3. Prepare the dipping sauce: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the tomato puree along with salt, onion powder, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Simmer the sauce gently for 5-7 minutes to blend the flavors.
  4. Heat the Blackstone griddle: Preheat your Blackstone griddle over medium heat and add 1/2 cup olive oil for frying. Allow the oil to heat until shimmering but not smoking.
  5. Fry the mozzarella slices: Carefully place the breaded mozzarella slices onto the hot griddle. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until the breading is golden brown and crispy. Flip gently to avoid cheese leakage. Remove and drain briefly on paper towels.
  6. Serve: Serve the fried mozzarella immediately with the warm garlic tomato dipping sauce for a perfect appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent the mozzarella from melting too quickly and escaping the breading.
  • Use fresh mozzarella slices that are about 1/4 inch thick for best results and easier breading.
  • For added flavor, you can mix some Italian herbs into the panko breadcrumbs.
  • This recipe is best enjoyed fresh as the fried breading will lose crispness if left to sit.
  • If not using a Blackstone griddle, a heavy skillet or frying pan with enough oil to shallow fry will work.
