Yeast Dough
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup whole milk, warm (about 110°F)
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Filling
- 1 cup fresh blackberries
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
Frosting
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp cream cheese, softened
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Prepare the yeast dough: In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it activate for 5-10 minutes until frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and activated yeast mixture. Knead the dough until soft and elastic, about 8-10 minutes. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 ½ hours until doubled in size.
- Make the filling: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Gently mash half of the blackberries to release their juice, then combine with the sugar-cinnamon mixture. Set aside.
- Assemble the rolls: On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle approximately 12×16 inches. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Evenly sprinkle the blackberry filling mixture across the dough, gently pressing the berries into the buttered surface.
- Roll and slice: Starting at the long edge, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice the log into 12 equal rolls using a sharp knife or dental floss.
- Bake the rolls: Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, leaving space as they will expand. Cover and let them rise for 30-45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Prepare the frosting: While the rolls bake, beat together powdered sugar, cream cheese, butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
- Frost and serve: Remove rolls from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before spreading the frosting evenly over the warm rolls. Serve fresh and enjoy.
Notes
- Use fresh blackberries for the best flavor and texture, but frozen berries can be used if thawed and drained well.
- Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
- Let the rolls cool slightly before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting fully into the rolls.
- These rolls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days.
- Reheat rolls gently in the microwave or oven for a warm treat.
