Beef Filling
- 250 g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/2 tablespoon sugar
- 3 teaspoons corn flour
- 1/3 cup water
Pastry & Topping
- 300 g store-bought pastry, cut into squares
- 2 egg yolks
- 3 tablespoons sesame seeds (adjust to taste)
- Prepare the sauce and beef mixture: In a small bowl, combine the corn flour, water, soy sauce, grated ginger, sugar, and sesame oil to create a sauce. Gradually add this sauce to the ground beef and finely chopped onion mixture, stirring continuously to ensure the sauce is fully absorbed. Add the sauce slowly for even absorption.
- Assemble the pies: Cut the store-bought pastry into approximately 8 cm squares. Place a portion of the beef mixture onto each pastry square. Fold or cover as desired and crimp the edges shut with a fork to seal the filling inside. Place the sealed pies on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
- Finish and bake: Brush the tops of the pies with beaten egg yolk to achieve a golden finish. Sprinkle sesame seeds generously over each pie. Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) and bake the pies for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden brown.
Notes
- Adding the sauce gradually ensures the beef mixture absorbs the flavors well without becoming too wet.
- You can adjust sesame seed quantity according to your preference for texture and flavor.
- Store-bought pastry can be puff pastry or shortcrust pastry based on your liking; both work well.
- These pies are best served warm and can be accompanied by a simple salad or dipping sauce like chili or hoisin sauce.
- Leftover pies can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
